What Happens After HGSE?

A picture of Longfellow Hall

It’s hard to believe that there are only three weeks left of the semester…and just over a month until graduation! For full-time Master’s students, our time at HGSE is coming to a close, which means it is time to kick the job search into high gear. Luckily for all students at HGSE, there are an abundance of resources to help at each and every stage of the job search process.

  • The Career Services Offices (CSO): Located right in Longfellow Hall (pictured above), the Career Services office is your one-stop-shop for all things job related. Need help with a resume or cover letter? Check. Want to prep for an upcoming interview? Check. Receive an offer and need to negotiate salary? Check (and you are guaranteed a meeting with someone from career services within 48 hours of receiving an offer!). In addition, the office offers a ton of resources online, various panels and workshops throughout the year, and a job board that is constantly being updated
  • Professors: While I knew that Professors would be helpful inside the classroom, I quickly realized how helpful and generous they are with their time. As a student in the higher education program, I am one of many recipients of Professor Judy McLaughlin’s emails that forward along job postings within the field of higher education. This week alone, Professor McLaughlin has forwarded emails outlining opportunities in admissions, educational technology, and higher education consulting– and it is only Wednesday! In addition, Professor Matt Miller (who taught my class on “Using Data to Inform Decision Making in Higher Education”) offered to be a resource for students as they continue on their job search. I was curious about how to integrate some of the data visualization skills I had learned in my class into a recent interview, so we scheduled a time to chat. Little did I know, our phone call would last one hour!
  • Alumni: HGSE truly feels like a community when you are a student here, and that feeling continues once you graduate. My classmates and I have emailed countless alums and gone on numerous informational interviews to learn more about different career paths. In addition, the Student Alumni Mentoring Initiative (SAMI) is an optional program that connects current HGSE students with alums. This program runs on an opt-in basis, and has been a really great resource for me throughout the year
  • Peers: Because the majority of students come to HGSE with work experience, they come to HGSE with built-in networks! Whether it is cohort-specific or in the general HGSE Facebook page, there are always networking and job opportunities abound.

Even though the job search process can be daunting, it is made better knowing that there are resources and kind individuals who want to help at HGSE.

Hi there! My name is Jaime Morgen and I am part of the higher education cohort here at HGSE, as well as one of the four graduate assistants in the HGSE admissions office. I graduated from Tufts University in 2014 with degrees in English, psychology, and entrepreneurial leadership. Immediately after graduating, I joined the Tufts office of undergraduate admissions first as an admissions counselor, and later as an assistant director of admissions. During my four years in the office, I managed our alumni interviewing program, coordinated events, and managed all print publications. Now that I have started my graduate studies, I am excited to finally be taking classes relating to higher education and be surrounded by talented, intelligent, and genuine individuals who share similar interests.
