Meet The HGSE Online Master’s Program Staff: Curating a Vibrant Virtual Community

Get to know the leaders behind HGSE’s Online Master’s Programs who help make virtual learning feel connected, personalized, and community-centered. In this feature, Nicole, Marcela, and Hameedha share what they find most meaningful about HGSE’s vibrant online community, what excites them about the future of online learning, and why students should always feel empowered to reach out for support, guidance, and connection.

Nicole Barone (she/her) – Director, Online Master’s Programs

Nicole Barone is Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Director of Online Master’s Programs. Outside of her work, Nicole enjoys traveling, attending live performances (concerts, theatre), and swimming (learning!).

What is the most underrated part of being a part of the HGSE Community?

One of the most underrated aspects of being part of the HGSE community is the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with faculty, staff, and students in a virtual environment. There is a perception that strong communities can’t be built online, but with intentionality (and some social engineering), it is absolutely possible for online students to thrive together. Of course, we absolutely love when our online students come together IRL. An added bonus: you can experience all that HGSE has to offer from the comfort of your own home.

What excites you the most about the future of your program?

I am excited that HGSE’s online programs make a Harvard education accessible to those who may not be able to relocate to Cambridge. HGSE students are trailblazers, and our online students are no exception. Over the past several years, I have seen this group build a strong presence both within HGSE and across the University. I look forward to the continued growth of our online offerings, and I am committed to advocating for more Harvard opportunities and resources for our online students.

Why should OEL Students reach out to you?

I often tell our students: if you’re not sure where to start or who to ask, start with me. My team (shoutout to Hameedha and Marcela!) supports students with everything from registration questions to personal challenges. If we don’t have the answer, we will make sure to connect you with the right person or resource. Reach out early and often because it is truly a joy to support you.

Marcela Dodi (she/her) – Program Administrator, Online Master’s Programs

Marcela Dodi (she/her) is a Program Administrator for Online Master’s Programs at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Outside of work, she enjoys traveling and discovering new places, cooking with family and friends, and gardening and taking care of plants.

The everyday generosity/support in the community.

What excites you the most about the future of your program?

The way it keeps expanding through a global network of lifelong scholars and learners.

Why should OEL Students reach out to you?

Hameedha Khan (she/they) – Program Administrator, Online Master’s Programs

My incredible colleagues!

Every year, I look forward to graduation because it is such a rewarding and special time for our students and their families. And a few months later, we get to meet a whole new cohort!

Why should HGSE students reach out to their Program ADs?

I am always open and excited to hear our students’ ideas for programming and ways to connect with the OEL community with each other!
