Robert (Rob) Jenkins

What brought you to the field of education?

A commitment to enabling every child to realize their full potential – and recognizing that education is central to that mission. With the growing body of evidence of the effectiveness of large-scale interventions that transform education systems, I am very excited about the potential to transform education systems globally. I am convinced that we are at a pivotal moment here change is possible which will have amazing benefits for all children globally.

Why are you passionate about the field of international education?

I have greatly appreciated the opportunity to contribute to positive change in a diverse range of settings while I worked for UNICEF for thirty years. I have witnessed the power of education to enable children to transform their lives, and I have also seen the opposite. The dynamic exchange of ideas here at HGSE on how to innovate and have a positive impact on education systems – at large-scale, is very inspiring.

What are you most excited for regarding this new program?

The program is designed for working professionals aspiring for leadership positions around the world. I look forward to engaging with committed professionals on actionable change to transform education systems. Being part of a process that builds a global network of education professionals committed to positive change is a great privilege and very exciting.

What are some classes you look forward to teaching in the new OEL pathway, and why?

My classes focus on skills to develop and manage large-scale programs in education to maximize positive impact. I also teach a course on how to enable children to learn in humanitarian and crisis-affected contexts. I bring to the classroom my thirty years of experience of working globally in the UN system (specifically UNICEF) and we review the latest best practices and lessons learned that will enhance positive impact on children’s learning.

What is your favorite thing about the international HGSE community?

The impressive faculty and broader community. Incredible professionals that are committed to making a positive change globally. The students are highly engaged – and their diverse experiences and perspectives lead to very fruitful exchanges and cross-learning.

What is your favorite thing about working at HGSE?

Engaging with students and sharing experiences and perspectives. Wrestling with the very significant challenges that the education system is facing globally and in many countries with the highly committed faculty, students and partners here at Harvard.

Who is an educator that inspires you?

I have had the incredible privilege to meet with teachers in a range of diverse settings around the world and have been consistently inspired by their commitment to enable ever child to reach their full potential.
