HGSE alumni work amazing jobs across the world. We asked alumni that are five-years out to share about their positions and post-HGSE perspectives. Cat Flynn was in the Mind, Brain, and Education program and graduated in 2014.
What is your current role/responsibilities?
For over six years, I have had the privilege of working at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), working in different functions related to the design and delivery of quality learning solutions for nontraditional learners. In my current role as Deputy Director of Learning Science, I help SNHU identify requirements of future learning solutions through experimentation with emerging technology to meet the needs of future learners. Through my learning sciences research, my goal is to investigate and identify the conditions that help every learner thrive on their own terms. So far in this role I have had the opportunity to contribute to a number of research projects helping SNHU meet the needs of future learners.
How did HGSE prepare you for the position?
During my time at HGSE, I found my learning science lens in Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL resonates with me for two reasons: 1) it is anchored by the mission of extending educational opportunities to all learners and 2) it democratizes neuroscience research, empowering designers, educators, administrators and others within the learning ecosystem to operationalize learning science and put it into action for the benefit of learners.
What is your favorite HGSE memory?
HT-123: Informal Learning for Children was one of my favorite HGSE experiences. The course gave me the opportunity to be part of an educational product development team with four of my classmates. My teammates and I complemented one another’s personalities and encouraged everyone to achieve their full potential. Over the course of a month we spent hours and hours designing an informal learning experience, fostering my love for learning design.
What is your advice to prospective students?
Savor every moment of your time at HGSE. Take every course and attend every talk you can. It goes by too fast!
