Self-care, Canvassing, Quality Family Time

Grad school can be stressful! We asked some of our students to share what did (or did not) work for them in managing the year. Kristen Robinson, a student in HGSE’s Higher Education program, says it was a combination of tried and true methods, with a mix of new activities, that worked for her.

A major way in which I engage in self-care is spending time with my family. My husband and my toddler son have grounded me and reminded me of what is important during this entire year, and there is nothing like a fit of toddler giggles to distract from stress about a paper or a set of readings.

I am an avid exerciser, and, during the school year, was able to go for a five-mile run five days a week. Moving my body and being outside energize me, and I always feel most peaceful when I’m going for a run. During COVID-19-induced social distancing, I have also been adding yoga to my exercise routine a few days a week, which has actually helped quell my anxiety immensely during this uncertain time.

Some other things that have brought be joy this year are: baking, which I do far more often than I should; listening to political podcasts (Crooked Media’s Pod Save America, Pod Save the People, and Pod Save the World are longtime favorites); reading a book for pleasure, which I have done very little of but have made it count when I do; and, for the first time this year, getting involved in a political campaign. A HGSE friend and I canvassed twice for a presidential candidate this winter, and I’m so glad I was able to conquer my fear of canvassing for the first time with a friend. It made it so much more fun!!
